The Government of Indonesia has implemented a significant revision to its visa-free entry policy, reducing the number of countries eligible for Visa-Free Visit facilities and reinforcing a more selective immigration framework based on reciprocity, national interest, tourism, investment, and immigration security. The latest implementation became effective in early July 2026 following the Directorate General of Immigration’s announcement under the existing legal framework established by Presidential Regulation No. 95 of 2024.
What Has Changed?
Indonesia has substantially reduced the number of countries whose citizens may enter Indonesia without obtaining a visa.
At present, visa-free entry is available only to sixteen countries and territories, consisting primarily of ASEAN Member States together with Brazil, Colombia, Hong Kong, Peru, Suriname, and Türkiye.
Citizens of many countries that previously enjoyed visa-free access—including Australia, the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and European Union Member States—are no longer eligible for visa-free entry.
Does This Mean Foreign Nationals Cannot Visit Indonesia?
No.
Most foreign nationals affected by this policy remain eligible to obtain a Visa on Arrival (VoA) or Electronic Visa on Arrival (e-VoA), provided they satisfy the applicable immigration requirements.
Accordingly, the policy does not prohibit travel to Indonesia. Rather, it changes the immigration process by requiring eligible visitors to obtain a visa and pay the applicable government fee before or upon arrival.
Practical Implications
Foreign nationals from affected countries should note the following:
- Visa-free entry is no longer available.
- A Visa on Arrival or e-VoA may now be required before entering Indonesia.
- Visitors should verify their nationality’s visa eligibility before booking travel.
- Additional immigration processing and visa fees should be anticipated.
